I just got my house and it's great! Most who are interested in this set probably already know each of the 210 episodes by heart, so I'll describe the packaging. It looks so cute on display. The roof lifts up to reveal the nine cases for each season. They look like minis of the individual season cases with sturdy covers that open up like books. They are set in the house at different heights so they are easy to pull out. Inside there is the episode list and photos like with the individual seasons. The discs are in cardboard sleeves that have a photo of one of the 5 main characters with two quotes. I know a lot of people are concerned about the cardboard sleeves scratching the discs. I will admit, they do fit rather tightly in the sleeves, but each sleeve has a paper backing that seems to protect the disc from scratches. I have not noticed scratches on the ones I've pulled out so far but, I haven't played these discs enough yet to really test it.
What I really like about the box set, besides it being so cute, is that it takes up less room than those big, bulky individual season sets. It takes up a little more than six individual seasons worth, so that frees up a lot of space in my cabinet. The discs have the same extras as the individuals seasons, plus you also get a book with the shooting script for "The Finale." The autographs of the writers are facsimiles on the cover. If the discs hold up (I've heard of disc protectors you can snap on called "D-Skins," but I'm not sure they will fit with this setup) and with the reasonable price you can get this for on Amazon right now, I see no reason to keep those bulky individual sets, so up for sale they go!

Network (1977) Review

Network (1977)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Paddy Chayefsky's 1976 blockbuster hit "Network" is, I truly believe, the best film satire ever made. It might well be the best film regardless of genre ever made in the United States, better than "Citizen Kane," better than "The Godfather," better than any of the other numerous contenders. The first time I saw "Network" was on television about ten years ago, a supreme irony that became more and more amusing as the film progressed, and the powerhouse dialogue, performances, and set pieces captured my imagination unlike any other film. I have since watched this film so many times that at one point I could quote large chunks of dialogue verbatim with the greatest of ease. Over the past several years, however, I haven't seen Chayefsky's masterpiece as often as I would like. When I decided I would finally tackle the daunting prospect of writing a review for this movie, I rented the DVD version and resubmerged myself into the dark world of Howard Beale, Max Schumacher, Diana Christensen, and Frank Hackett. And I rediscovered something I always realize every time I watch this magnificent piece of cinema: "Network" is as great a movie as it was the first time I saw it, and it's prescience to our modern world continues to astonish.
"Network" takes the viewer inside of a major television network, UBS, during the 1970s. Their prime time newscaster, Howard Beale (Peter Finch), has just received word from his boss Max Schumacher (William Holden) that the network is terminating his contract due to low ratings. Perturbed about leaving his position, and with nothing else in life to live for, Beale breaks down on television and promises his audience that he will kill himself on live television the following evening. Not surprisingly, this revelation causes quite a stir amongst the suits on the upper floors. Frank Hackett (Robert Duvall), the new overseer of the network since its acquisition by a larger corporation called CCA, threatens once again to clean house. Schumacher convinces Hackett and the other executives to hold off because Howard is essentially insane, and he even manages to get Beale back on the air the following evening in order to issue a public apology. Max has his own reasons for supporting Beale: the network is threatening to cut the budget of the news division in order to decrease the debt load, a decision they failed to notify Schumacher about beforehand. When Howard goes off on a rant about the sicknesses of American society the following evening, Max refuses to cut the live feed as a protest against the network's unfair treatment.
Hackett hits the roof, but when entertainment division chief Diana Christensen (Faye Dunaway) convinces him that Beale's rants brought in a record number of viewers, a new idea quickly forms. What if the network encouraged Howard's irrational behavior? What if they made a program based solely on his prophecies about the state of modern America? That's exactly what Christensen and Hackett accomplish when "The Howard Beale Show" debuts on UBS. In front of a roaring crowd, the former newsman raves about the evils of corporatism, the corrosive effects of television, and public corruption. At the end of each tirade, Beale collapses in a faint in front of the cameras. Audiences eat these histrionics up, and ratings for the show go through the roof. UBS is well on its way to turning a profit. Meanwhile, a subplot about Max and Diana plays out. The two embark on a tempestuous love affair despite their professional quibbling about Howard and Max's longtime marriage. While Christensen sets about creating new programs highlighting left-wing revolutionary activities, programs like "The Mao Tse-Tung Hour," Max leaves his wife and moves into Diana's apartment. Their relationship resembles a television program, and as Howard's ratings slip after he receives a readjustment to his worldview from CCA chairman Arthur Jensen (Ned Beatty), Max and Diana's union also falters. The film's conclusion is as cruel as it is darkly hilarious.
I've never seen, nor do I expect to ever see again, a film like "Network." Each element of the film fires on every cylinder. Time stops while watching this picture. The performances from major and minor characters are sublime, but it's Peter Finch who grabs the spotlight with both hands and refuses to let go. His Howard Beale raves, rants, gesticulates, and issues statements on the world that spellbind with their power and elegance. His monologue to Max about his mental state, his lecture to audiences about the illusion of television, and his take on corporate buyouts brings me to my feet every time I hear them. Just as memorable is Arthur Jensen's mind-blowing analysis of the true nature of the corporate universe and the ultimate fate of mankind if the citizens of the world allow his ilk to have their way. The film ends with Max Schumacher labeling Diana Christensen "television incarnate" because of her total inability to form meaningful emotional connections. In fact, the mindlessness and callousness of television, how it reduces every aspect of human sentiment and interaction to one-dimensional superficialities, ultimately destroys every character in this film.
I could keep going ad infinitum, explaining how Max represents the common man faced with the daunting task of giving in to his cravings for television (re: Diana) or simply turning it off for good by returning to the wholesomeness of family life. I could also examine how Chayefsky shows us television destroying not only those who watch it but also those who fill the medium with images, i.e. the decision Hackett and Christensen feel they must make concerning Beale's plummeting ratings. What I really want to do is fill this review with line after line of the brilliant dialogue uttered in this film. I won't though; you need to see this tour de force motion picture for yourself. And realize how much of it pertains to our society today. Mad as hell, indeed!

Heartbreak Hotel (1988) Review

Heartbreak Hotel (1988)
Average Reviews:

'Heartbreak Hotel' is one one the all-time greatest entertainment treasures. With a solid, brilliant cast led by the incredibly talented Mr. David Keith as Elvis Presley, this movie could brighten even the dullest mood with its simple charm, humour and wonderful music. Some have complained about the lack of facial likeness between Mr. Keith and 'the King' as if that was an error of some kind rather than focusing on the fact that Mr. Keith captures the essence of Elvis without having to rely on physical likeness which can only testify to this great actor's limitless capabilities, so much so, that there are moments when Elvis almost appears transfigure through David Keith, who incidently is also a native of the State of Tennessee.No-one ever intended this movie to be taken seriously, but only enjoyed for its sheer entertainment value. The majority of the singing is actually performed by David Keith himself, which no Elvis impersonator could top !! I have read reviews of this movie which cast doubt on this fact, but if you watch the end titles you will see his vocal performing credits. I also know that he used his own voice because HE told me in person during several chats I had with him whilst he was here in Hope, BC with James Spader filming the upcoming movie 'The Stick-Up'.Charlie Schlater is also an immensely talented actor with the same kind of natural charisma and talent of Michael J. Fox. As I said previously, all the cast are magnificent and obviously adored making this movie as their pleasure and happiness shines through.Remember, this is not an Elvis biography, but merely a fantasy tale which in its own way honours the memory of the real Elvis. A heartfelt tribute to 'the King'.David Keith can also be seen in 'An Officer and a Gentleman'; 'U-571'; 'Men of Honor'; 'Brubaker'; 'The Rose'; 'The Lords of Discipline'; 'Major League 2'; and 'Texas' among many others.

Elf (Ultimate Collector's Edition) Review

Elf (Ultimate Collector's Edition)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I loved this movie. It was totally bonkers: a human baby accidently ends up on the north pole and grows up among the elf community that supports Santa Claus. Buddy, as he comes to be known, knows that he's "special" however, since he can't keep up with the other elves. Never mind the fact that he's about three times as tall as any of them and barely fits in the shower.
When he's 30, and still young by Elf standards, he learns that he's really a human. Buddy decides to go in search of his father (who's on Santa's naughty list), to find out where he belongs. He walks to New York (through the Lincoln tunnel), and is immediately run over by a cab. The chain of events starts at that moment ...
Buddy is a delightful and enchanting character with many special talents and a childish personality. He is naive to the point of stupidity, but charming all the while. His lovable demeanour gains him friends in spite of his clumsy efforts. He is sweet, kind and generous. When his father at first rejects him, Buddy ends up in a department store where other elves (people who pretend to be Santa's elves) are working, and stays up all night to decorate the place. When the department store Santa isn't the real Santa, well, you can guess what happens ...
Buddy eats spaghetti covered in syrup, smarties and pop tarts; he gets drunk in the mail room of his father's office and his young half-brother shows him to ask a girl out on a date.
But all the while, things are looking bad for Santa Claus (and also Buddy's father). How will Buddy rescue the day? When Santa crashes his sleigh in Central Park, it's Buddy's moment to shine.
Abstract, enchanting, child-like madness all make up this beautiful movie. Absolutely delightful and recommended to viewers of all ages. If you want a Christmas feel-good movie, this is it.

Glee: The Complete First Season (2010) Review

Glee: The Complete First Season (2010)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First, all of these low reviews are based on the fact that people bought Season 1, Volume 1 DVD's of the show - and are now mad that they are releasing a full season on DVD. Here are a couple of points that you should acknowledge before putting up a low rating:
1. They started selling Volume 1 before the entire season was complete. If you think about that for a minute - how were they going to sell a "whole" season DVD if the shows had not even aired yet? How can you be surprised that you would then be faced with a choice at the end of the season between buying the full season in one set or having to buy Volume 2? Other shows have done the same thing, like Battlestar Galatica. Sure, they do it to make money - to hit the market while the shows are hot - but the fault is really the consumer. If we all stopped buying these 1/2 season DVD's, they would stop selling them. You KNOW they are gonna release a full season DVD at the end of the season. Heck, even if a show is cancelled, they still release it on DVD to make extra money. Be patient.
2. Volume 2 is listed here on Amazon for pre-order and they are giving a discount to anyone who bought Volume 1, if they buy the whole season 1. Don't make it sound like you are being forced to buy the whole season now. You have the option of getting Volume 2, or getting the full season at a discount.
As for the show, I love it. The writing and dialoge is well crafted and the characters, though somewhat stylized, are believable. I will admit, that the last couple shows seemed to lose a step and allowed the music to become more important that the storyline - so, hopefully now that the urgent competition is over, the story lines would be allowed to grow. I did like that they have broadened the focus, allowing the supporting cast to do more solo work and shine more in the singing department. The character of Sue is one of the best characters written on any show today.
Now that the first season is out on Blu-ray, I would encourage those who have heard about the show - who may have caught an episode or two - to start at the beginning and enjoy the Glee experience. We finally have a show that combines comedy, drama, musical features, and good writing. Take the chance.

I saw Agent Cody Banks 2: Destination London in theaters. From what I had seen in the previews, I was expecting to be at least as good as, if not better than, the first one. When the movie was over, I was very satisfied. It was just as good as the first one. It would have been much better if they had cut out the scene with the crazy guy who was supplying Cody's gadgets. Other than that, I give it two thumbs up. I can hardly wait until it comes out on DVD!!!

Holiday Family Collection (2008) Review

Holiday Family Collection (2008)
Average Reviews:

This "FAMILY HOLIDAY COLLECTION" with 12 Holiday Movies (from 1935 - 1964), 49 Holiday TV Episodes (1950's and 60's) and 27 Christmas Cartoons (1940's - 1960's) is a very nice mix of seasonal Favorites of yesteryear. 8 DVD's and over 40 hours of Holiday entertainment!
NOTE: Most is in Black and White format, direct VHS transfers, ALL 4:3 aspect ratio (Standard) and some are grainy with some audio inferiority. But for the most part a very enjoyable and entertaining mix for the holiday's.
My favorites and suggested viewing for the movies: Beyond Tomorrow (1940) a very nice story about 3 old rich gentlemen who take in a young forlorn couple during the holidays (with a nice twist). The Miracle on 34th Street (1955 made for television) not as good as the 1947 version with Natalie Wood but still a fun story. And Scrooge (1935) a rare English version nice touch (a little grainy but a treat to experience).
My favorite Cartoons were The First Christmas, Howdy Doody Christmas, Jingle Bells, and Rudolph, the Red Nose Reindeer.
My favorite Tv episodes were many; All 5 of the "Ozzie and Harriet", Racquet Squad (the Christmas caper), Charles Dicken's The Christmas Carol with Vincent Price as the narrator, The RUGGLES (Christmas Eve 1952) and the A Child is Born. Also there is a BONUS virtual fireplace sequence too!! (very clear with crackling burning logs in COLOR)
Just sit back and enjoy some really memorable Christmas / Holiday fun!! I recommend this Collection for any family there something here for everyone!!!! Enjoy.
