(More customer reviews)I am a new fan. I never heard of Paul Mooney until he started showing up on Chappeles' Show, and Howard Stern. I immediately became a fan. Edgy and loaded with great observations about race in America, this DVD hits the mark. I am white and am no way offended by what he says. I think there are severe differences with color and enjoy someone that does not hide behind the PC police to cover that up.
If I have one complaint it's the fact that the stand up routine is often times interrupted with other comics telling us, the viewer, what a genius Paul Mooney is. I don't know why they would produce it like that. I would rather just have the routine uncut. I could care less what Sandra Bernhard has to say about him.
Mooney has a great way to tell stories that are funny, but make you think. I like the fact that it's not all white people dance funny jokes. He dishes it out to his own people as well. I have always been a big fan of humor that is also topical and means something, I have been a Carlin fan for years and I like Lewis Black. Discovering Paul Mooney has made me enjoy Stand-Up Comedy again.

(More customer reviews)I picked up the Digital Dojo box set--which is the first season of Ranma 1/2--and thought it was excellent. I then ordered several discs from this season and was eagerly awaiting them. Unfortunately, this disc can't hold a candle to season one. The story line is just not as interesting as season one--it seems to be more childish. The theme songs aren't as catchy and there are no extras to speak of. Pioneer hasn't even put volume or episode numbers on them, so it's hard to tell which disc is which. The dub voice actors aren't as good as they were for the Digital Dojo; however, the Japanese voice actors are still good.
I'm not saying you shouldn't buy this, but if you haven't seen Digital Dojo yet, pick up that.

I was duped into this purchase by the cover which looks good and that's about it.[...]. There's not much going on in this flim if u can call it that. Looks like my drunk uncles camera work at our family reunion barbecue. Some of the people that are in this, look as if the're trying to hold back from giggling and staring into the camera lens. [...] I only spend time to write this because of the anger toward myself for buying and the people who distributed this dung. Hopefully I can save u from purchasing this waste of time and money. It's not one of those so bad its good movies. I usually really like trash that's entertaining. There isn't one damn thing to like here. Do yourself a favor and don't spend any time on this, keep your money and go out for pizza.

(More customer reviews)"Anita and Me" was a fun yet poignant movie which explores the themes of coming-of-age and integration. Set in the 70s, the story centers on 12-year-old Meena Kumar (played brilliantly by Chandeep Uppal), a Punjabi girl who lives in a small town somewhere in the Midlands, England in the 70s. Her parents are Indian migrants who have worked hard to achieve a reasonable standard of life, yet find it a challenge to integrate themselves into English society, preferring the company of those who share their culture. Meena on the other hand, yearns to be blonde, eat Western food, and become a published writer for Jackie magazine.
When Meena meets her new neighbor Anita (Anna Brewster), a slim, blonde teenage girl, Meena is determined to gain her confidence and become her friend, even if Anita's friendship might cause Meena to do things against her better judgement. Anita is the polar opposite of Meena - she comes from a broken family as opposed to Meena's stable, loving family; Anita is not studious nor highly literate; and, Anita sees sex as a means to an end and as a way to cope with her own bleak life. I found it hard to accept Meena's infatuation with Anita because Anita is not a likable person - she is spiteful and can be incredibly mean. Perhaps it is Anita's carefree, wanton approach to life and her freedom to do as she wishes, something which is denied Meena by her overprotective parents. But even here I found some inconsistencies. As protective as Meena's parents are, they allow her to go about on her own at all times of the day and night, something which is not satisfactorily explained in the movie. The scenes with the Indian relatives and friends is fun to watch, but these characters appear stereotypical without much character development.
In spite of these flaws, I gave the movie four stars because the lead actress did an excellent job portraying the adolescent angst of a young immigrant trying to fit into a society which for the time was incredibly racist. The scenes where Meena is hoping to catch the eye of a Caucasian boy and instead loses out to an obese Caucasian girl are painful to watch, yet shows with some degree of realism, how things were back then. This is a bittersweet coming-of-age drama which might appeal to fans of the genre.

(More customer reviews)The series remains cute but with only a few episodes left, it seems that they had one final spurt of... let's call it creativity that the staff felt the need to get out. The first three episodes are entertaining in their own way I suppose but the few seconds of foreshadowing in each one do not make them any more worth watching than they would be otherwise and so you can completely get away with just watching the last episode to set yourself up for the series finale. I won't be sorry to see this one end but with over twenty episodes of build up so far, I would be lying if I said I weren't the least bit curious about how they plan on wrapping it all up.

(More customer reviews)This is a great light and funny comedy that I think everybody can enjoy. It does have a bit of violence but it is not over the top with it. Hanks is his usual funny self and this is one of his early roles before he became the serious icon that he has become and rightly so. But the STAR of the movie is HOOCH the Dogue de Bourdeaux (or French Mastiff). This dog has the most charisma I have ever seen in a dog. The big red beautiful (in the eyes of the beholder)beast has everything it takes to steal the spotlight from Tom Hanks and everybody else in the movie. He is at the same time one of the ugliest and cutest animals ever on film. The dog has the chops, the look and the acting ability to make Turner and Hooch and all time favorite for both adults and kids (maybe not too young though cause of the crime plot) but watching Hanks play off the dog is hilarious.

(More customer reviews)This is an excellent film. Listening to the Italian makes me think it is the language in which all battles should be fought! "Ricordati Di Me" or "Remember Me, My Love" is a domestic drama that maps the lack of closeness in the modern life of an Italian family & the bonds of love that lay deep beneath the surface that hold them together. The blockbuster performance is by Laura Morante as Giulia, the wife of Carlo. She puts so much energy into this performance that she is incredible. Kind of like a high-octane version of some of Jane Fonda's edgy classic performances, Laura seems to be torn in numerous directions simultaneously. Her eyes twitch, her hands flap, she even smokes a cigarette with more nervous energy than some would expend at a football match. She is a marvel to watch. Fabrizio Bentivoglio as her husband Carlo portrays the graying accountant, apparently going through a mid-life crisis by having an affair by the lovely Monica Belucci who plays Alessia. He seems particularly calm & sedate until he comes alive with eyes sparkling for Alessia. His calmness seems all the more sedate compared to the furious storm of Laura Morante. As the daughter Valentina, Nicolette Romanoff is beautiful and turns in a good performance as the daughter looking to make her mark in show business and willing to do whatever it takes to accomplish that. Silvio Muccino as the son Paolo does a nice job as a teenage guy who is trying to get some romantic experience. Monica Belucci's performance is as deep as she is beautiful. The photography and pacing of the film are all ably handled by director Gabriele Muccino. [I particularly enjoyed seeing on the wall of the son's bedroom a large three concentric circle CD holder that doubled as a wall hanging and functional CD container. Where can I find one of those! :) ] While the plot is not shocking or startling, it is well done. This is a film well worth checking out; and certainly for seeing the fine performance of Laura Morante. Enjoy!

Hula Girls (2006) Review

(More customer reviews)For those that have watched the Full Monty, Brassed off, you have a good idea of what to expect. Yes, the story might be cliche but it's done very effectively in this offering. Yet again, this is based upon a true story in a rural township in Japan in the mid-60s when the mining town is facing the dire situation of extinction as the main industry of mining coal is coming to an end. A scheme is suggested to revive employment there by having a purpose built bath resort with a Hawaiian theme. To do that, it needs hula girls. In the beginning, recruiting the dancers is a tall order as Japan during that time is still conservative and baring too much flesh is a definite no-no. However, there is a stubborn girl who steadfastly refuses to give up even though she's being excommunicated from her mother who happens to be a mining comittee member anti progressive movement. However, she has a loving and supportive elderly brother who encourages her to follow her dream. She would subsequently become the lead dancer. Normally, a Hollywood offering would concentrate in training those misfits into successful people and we would sit through the routine of artificial gags to make us laugh. For this instance, there is actually character development through the dancing teacher who is recruited from Tokyo. She has a ferocious temper and running away from her demon for not being able to hit the big time in Tokyo. As time progresses, as she sees commitment in eyes of those miners' daughters, she suddenly discovers herself by having a goal to turn the fate of the dying town around. Hula Girls is a surprisingly touching movie and I'm deeply moved by it. It's really amazing to read the end credit to say that Hula Girls are still running strong today and that the same teacher is still doing her thing at that resort now. Highly recommended for a shot in the arm to follow our dreams.

(More customer reviews)His name is Zunar J5 Zoric 9/49, but everyone just calls him Jake. His home planet is never identified, but they must have some beautiful felines there if this talented extraterrestrial abyssinian is their ambassador.
Actually, Jake just comes to Earth because of maintenance problems on his space-going scout ship. After arriving, he teams up with a superb comic cast, including Ken Berry, Sandy Duncan, MacLean Stevenson, Harry Morgan and Roddy McDowell for some of the zaniest adventures you or your children will ever enjoy. Just for good measure, Jake brings along the most unique flea collar ever made, and therein lies most of the story.
Jake only needs a small amount of a fairly common substance (on his planet) to repair his ship. Unfortunately, that common substance turns out to be about $120,000 worth of gold. Needing that kind of material help in a short period of time provides the vehicle for a madcap comedy.
The Cat from Outer Space isn't a classic, but it's close, and it's wonderful entertainment that you can be comfortable letting your children watch without supervision. You won't even mind when they ask to see it again and again. You'll probably watch, too!
Highly recommended for Disney fans and Cat Lovers everywhere.

(More customer reviews)Short Circuit is one of those movies that when it came out in 1985 I remembered walking out thinking what a fun film that was. Alley Sheedy and Steve Guttenberg were a great screen team. And fresh of Saturday Night Fever ad Wargames, director John Badham really showed the compassionate side of humanity. This is a warm and friendly family film for everyone.
The plot is simple - aren't they all? The military develops a device meant for war and `first strike' and decides to take it to the officials of the government for funding. Five very unique and laser-powered robots are built. Something happens to one of them, "Number 5", during the demonstration where an electrical storm creates an electrical surge and super jolts Number 5. Guess what? He comes alive! Complete with a personality and a small amount charm. He escapes (accidentally) and befriends an animal activist Stephanie (Sheedy) while Newton (Guttenberg) is assigned to chase him down and get him back.
Now add the adversary of the military trying to destroy him and you've got a great chase movie. Filled with laughs, bits, gags and a few scene stealing lines, this movie makes you believe that Number 5 IS alive! Some great supporting character roles and a lot of technically puppetry that would make even George Lucas jealous - the energy in this movie is great.
The DVD extras include a commentary with the director and writers as well as the original 1985 interviews with cast and crew. This is definitely a fun family film and something everyone who likes science fiction and fantasy mixed together will enjoy this a lot!

(More customer reviews)I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. Other than that guy from the 70's Show, I'd never heard of any of the people involved with it. But someone told my husband it was good, so we gave it a whirl. It's not something I would've picked myself but it turned out to be a lot of fun! Very clever, and better than a lot of other "so-called" comedies that get made these days. It actually has some good characters, an interesting story, and it's funny. It's a heist movie, but it's pretty much the lamest heist ever, which is the point cause it's a comedy. I LMFAO at some of the jokes!!! Anyway, it's told from four different points of view, all in different cinema styles, with all four groups trying to do the same heist on the same night. I didn't really get the 1970s "cinema" style, but my husband loves old movies like that and he said it was spot on. Some of the actors are really great (not that Lolita chick, who my husband loves, but everybody else). And there's the cutest dog EVER in it! He totally stole the movie. I just wanted to pick him up and take him home to my mother! We own it and I think we will actually watch it again. Now that I know how it all unfolds, I think it will be even better on the re-watch.

(More customer reviews)I've waited for I Married Joan, Collection set II to get a DVD release. I have been checking & checking, & at last it's coming out! The first set was great, the DVD quality was pretty good too, given the time the series came out.
Joan Davis is a highly underrated, classy & talented Comedic Actress who left us a great legacy of her work to enjoy for generations to come. I have watched episodes of this series over & over again & am greatly entertained. Joan is wonderful at physical comedy with her various expressions & style of comedy, we can't help but be reeled in at Joan Stevens' screwball antics & anticipate more chaos & fun in coming episodes!
Jim Backus is fantastic as Joan's put-upon Husband, Judge Bradley Stevens. The cast works well, which adds to the winning formula of this sitcom. Sadly, Bev, Joanie's real-life Daughter had passed on rather young. She portrayed Joan's Sister in the show. She even bore a fairly strong resemblance to Joan, & was a fine contribution to the series.
I highly recommend all fans of vintage sitcoms & fine comedy to add this series to your library. It's one of the best & I have proudly added it to mine. I just hope future DVD releases are put out.

Before we repackage "The Awful Truth" again, let's see a DVD release of Moore's NBC/Fox show from the mid-90s. Talk about groundbreaking. I remember the first time I watched it, I couldn't believe I was actually hearing these types of viewpoints on broadcast television. It actually gave me brief hope that maybe the networks weren't all corporate monoliths with no room for truly progressive perspectives. Alas, it didn't last long.

(More customer reviews)When I watched the first episode of "Parks and Recreation", I was let down. It was unfunny, unoriginal, and dull. Being an Amy Poehler fan though, I decided to stick with it to see if it improved. To my surprise, not only did it improve, it became better than most sitcoms out there nowadays. If you reviewed this negatively based solely on the first episode, I would suggest watching the entire season as even I agree with your first episode assessment. If you like "30 Rock" and "The Office", this show fits in nicely to that style of comedy.

(More customer reviews)I don't agree that La Magie Continue is boring. There are a couple of acts that didn't hold my interest, but most of the acts were very entertaining. One of the differences between this and the other shows is the lack of a storyline or theme. This is more a succession of acts that are not always connected by a bigger picture (like Quidam or Varekai). In spite of this it was still fun to watch. My favorite act is the clown conducter. Whoever that guy is, he has the most expressive face and it really adds to his performance.

Dudley Moore is at his best in these to classic 80's comedy hits. This is a plus considering that it's on 2 discs and not on the single 2 sided disc that seems to get scratched all the time and you have to decide which side of the disc you want to keep in good mint condition.

Dudley does right! Dudley Moore is Arthur, the irrepressible, irresponsible playboy who faces marriage to a woman he detests to keep his fortune?and then meets the right woman (Liza Minnelli) from the wrong side of the tracks. John Gielgud won an Academy Award? (1981 Best Supporting Actor) as Arthur's acerbic valet. "I'll alert the media," he says when Arthur announces his intention to take a bath. The title tune also won Oscar? gold for Original Song. A business deal bilks Arthur out of his fortune and he must (egad!) get a job in the sequel. But laughs are still the common currency as Moore, Minnelli and Gielgud return. Enjoy!
